For years, Hyun Jung Jung melted the meanings of home into the objects she collected. Moving so often, the transience of these spaces with the uncertainty of how long she will live in each space, made the artist equip herself with the readiness to move to a different place whenever it was needed.

Unable to carry the physical house, Jung turned to her collected objects as vessels to capture the essence of home; the objects that now hold an array of memories, nostalgia, joy, sadness, excitement, longing, and more.

In Emotions of Home, Jung utilizes these artifacts as the material, transforming them into various sculptures and installations. Through this process, she hopes these works will forever exude the precious memories they’ve captured.

___ words from Hyun Jung:

Even a familiar house can transform into an entirely new space with a simple furniture arrangement. Countless events happen at home, and every second of it gets accumulated and becomes part of the home each second.

During the month, Hyun Jung Jung will be inviting fellow creatives to utilize this space to showcase their works within the frame of Emotions of Home. This project mirrors the ever evolving story of a home setting, where different events happen day by day.

"성수 2023년 8월 (Seong-su August 2023)" at Emotions of Home

10/20 - 10/22, opening night 10/20 6-8pm

"성수 2023년 8월 (Seong-su August 2023)" is a textile piece documenting various textures found on the streets of Seong-Su, a popular destination and temporary home during Ilgi Studio's recent trip to Seoul. Walls that show time, human touch, layers, and deterioration from extreme weather, felt new and exciting as an outsider. Knowing these textures and moments in time are fleeting and will change on a daily basis, they are preserved as a time capsule and brought to life on a new surface, existing now in the present in a new unfamiliar environment.

With an everlasting curiosity and desire to understand dual identity, family history, and overall Korean culture, short excursions from the United States to South Korea are made with the hopes of overcoming distances both physically and culturally. Understanding this futile undertaking of wanting to know both worlds, "성수 2023년 8월 (Seong-su August 2023)" embraces this state through the practice of archiving and preservation, an artful approach and process explored before commercializing ideas into an Ilgi Studio design.

Ilgi Studio is a lifestyle and apparel brand exploring documentation and reflection, drawing thematic inspiration from environments and personal experiences. Through a dually Korean and American point of view, the processes behind each garment are introspective, nostalgic, and sentimental, celebrating memories as precious archived objects.
