Douglas Burns uses everyday materials to create paintings and sculptures rooted in daily life. Committed to working with his surroundings, he often collaborates with his children at home, makes collages while traveling with his band, or repurposes discarded items from his day job. Shaped by a childhood spent sketching scenes outside the window of his family’s station wagon, his work explores loss, memory, and legacy. Through humble materials and shared gestures, Burns aims to honor life’s messiness—its beauty, sorrow, and impermanence.

Burns has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo shows in New York, Munich, and a museum exhibition at the Washington Pavilion in South Dakota. He holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BA from Portland State University. He is the founder and director of Souvenir, an experimental art space in Northeast Portland, Oregon.

In addition to his work in visual arts, Burns is also an internationally recognized songwriter and musician best known for his work with his bands Red Dons, Revisions and The Observers.
