Split Shifts

Split Shifts is an interdisciplinary exhibition of works honoring grief and labor - manual, artistic, and maternal. Artist Catherine Reinhart encrusts, mends, and adorns abandoned textiles, creating modern relics from work gloves and domestic textiles. Haunting the borderlands of construction sites, vacant lots, and disheveled bedrooms, she explores thresholds to the unmonumental. By holding the damage in the mends, these objects become records of care and an archive of repetition.

The title of the exhibition, Split Shifts, refers to labor: manual, maternal, and artistic. It also references typical shift work, which occurs in disparate chunks outside of the 9-to-5. Similarly, this work of an artist and caregiver falls outside of operating hours, in the margins of life. Of artistic and maternal labor, the artist is accustomed. These physical adorations of manual labor are an expansion of these themes.

This margin work is often invisible and underpaid. In the case of motherhood, it is not compensated at all. This work is iterative and full of care. Rubbings of graves marked ‘mother’, mending, beading, and stitching parallel these humane actions. This exhibition both adorns and mourns these uncelebrated efforts.
