This show takes its title from a moment in Milton’s Paradise Lost, where Eve is describing the overwhelming, ceaseless task of tending to the Garden of Eden. Tending to Wild is a continued exploration of the human relationship to plant life - from desire to ignorance. Through painting and sculpture, Elliott considers the folkloric allure of ripe fruits and potent seed, the labors of the gardener, and the cunning stealth of the forager. Recognizing the garden as a site of transformation and protection, the paintings look for moments when plants surprise and enchant: a glowing red rosehip, daisies bursting out of their enclosure, straggly poppy stems doing intricate flips in their search for sunlight.
